Origin Energy commissions 460 MW/1.8 GWh BESS in New South Wales (Australia)

The Australian energy group Origin Energy has commissioned the first phase of its Eraring Battery project, the Eraring Battery 1, a 460 MW/1,770 MWh BESS in New South Wales (Australia). The project, now commercially operational, connects to the National Electricity Market (NEM), serving Australia’s eastern states and territories.

According to Origin Energy, "all four stages of the Eraring BESS are now in construction or commissioning phase". Origin selected Wärtsilä for Stage 1 of the project in 2023, for Stages 2 and 3 in 2024, and for Stage 4 in December 2025. The Stage 4 extension will commence in December 2025 and is expected to be completed by early 2027. With this fourth phase, the Eraring battery's capacity will rise to 700 MW/3,160 MWh and will provide increased capacity to help balance the grid as renewable generation grows and coal-fired plants retire
