Orascom Construction will build a 500 MW wind project in Egypt

The Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) has awarded a 20-year concession to a consortium to build, construct and operate a 500 MW wind project in Ras Ghareb. The consortium is led by the Egyptian company Orascom Construction, which has a 25% stake in the consortium and will build the project, and also comprises Toyota Tsusho Corporation/Eurus Energy Holdings Corporation (Japan) and ENGIE (France).  Construction will start once the project reaches financial close and will last 30 months.

Egypt's wind capacity reached 1,375 MW at the end of 2020. The 2035 Integrated Sustainable Energy strategy (2016) set a target of 20% of electricity production from renewables in 2022 and 42% for 2035, with 25% from solar, 14% from wind, and 2% from hydropower. Most of the new capacity is expected to be delivered by the private sector.
