Operations begin on the 1.4 GW UK-Denmark Viking Link interconnector

The UK’s National Grid has announced the start of operations on the 1.4 GW Viking Link subsea interconnector, which runs for more than 764 km and links the Bicker Fen substation in Lincolnshire (UK) with the Revsing substation in southern Jutland (Denmark). The 525 kV Viking Link will initially be operating at a capacity of 800 MW before increasing power over time to reach its full 1.4 GW.

The GBP1.7bn (€2bn) project is a joint venture between the UK’s National Grid and the Danish system operator Energinet. It has the capacity to transport enough electricity to supply about 2.5 million UK households and is expected to bring over GBP500m (€577m) of cumulative savings for UK consumers over the next decade, due to cheaper imported power from Denmark.

Construction on Viking Link, National Grid’s sixth interconnector, started in 2019. Installation of the cables was completed by the Italian cable manufacturer Prysmian Group in early September 2023.
