ONR approves decommissioning of nuclear power plant in Scotland (UK)

The UK Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) has granted consent to EDF Energy’s application to start decommissioning the Hunterston B nuclear power plant.

In 2022, the 985 MW Hunterston B nuclear power plant reached the end of its operating life after nearly 46 years of generating electricity and moved into its defuelling phase, which is expected to be completed in 2025. Once completely defuelled, the nuclear site licence will be transferred from EDF Energy to Nuclear Restoration Services (NRS), a subsidiary of the UK's Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, to decommission the site (including the dismantling and demolishing of the plant and buildings).

At the end of 2023, the United Kingdom had a total installed capacity of 108 GW, including 5.9 GW of nuclear (5.5%).
