The Moroccan energy office, Office national de l'électricité et de l’eau potable (ONEE), has decided to review its M"Dez - El Menzel hydropower project near Sefrou, turning the 125 MW hydropower plant into a pumped-storage project (size to be unveiled later).
The ONEE has cancelled two international tenders for the project development: a turnkey contract including studies, civil works, equipment, transport and commissioning of the plant and a contract for the access roads and hydraulic circuits works. Six consortia had expressed interest in the project, including a consortium of Acciona Infraestructuras, Andritz Hydro and Entreprise marocaine de travaux (EMT), a consortium of SinoHydro and Harbin Electric Machinery Company and a consortium of Voith and Société générale des travaux du Maroc (SGTM).
The revised pumped storage project will strengthen the capacities of the 460 MW Afourer hydropower plant and of a 350 MW project near Agadir (Abdelmoumen) expected in 2020.
