OMVS inaugurates the 140 MW Gouina hydropower project in southern Mali

The Organisation for the Development of the Senegal River (Organisation pour la mise en valeur du fleuve Sénégal, OMVS) has inaugurated the 140 MW Gouina hydropower project, located in the district of Diamou in south-western Mali. Work began on the run-of-river power plant in November 2016. The 1,230m dam is equipped with three hydraulic units with a capacity of 46.6 MW each, and a 280 km power line was built to connect the dam to the grid. The project has already been supplying electricity for several months as it was first connected to the electricity network of Mali, Mauritania and Senegal in March 2022. The FCFA284bn (US$460m) project was built by the Chinese firm Sinohydro and 85% of the project was funded by the Chinese bank Eximbank.

At the end of 2020, hydro represented nearly 34% of Mali’s installed capacity with 315 MW and 35% of its power generation with nearly 1.5 TWh. The country currently has 756 MW of hydro capacity under development.
