Romanian oil and gas company OMV Petrom, a subsidiary of Austria’s OMV, will team up with the state-owned lignite power producer CE Oltenia to build four solar PV parks, totalling 450 MW, that will be located on the sites of former mining operations managed by CE Oltenia in southern Romania.
The project, which is expected to cost around €400m, should provide electricity to the national power grid starting from 2024. The EU’s modernisation fund will provide 70% of the funds for the project and the two companies will provide the rest.
Romania has committed to phasing out coal by 2032 and replacing it with gas, nuclear and renewable energy. At the end of 2021, solar energy represented nearly 7% of Romania’s total installed capacity with 1.4 GW.
