The Omani Government has inaugurated the 230 kb/d Duqm oil refinery, located in central Oman. The OMR3.5bn (US$9bn) refinery, which was developed by a 50-50 joint venture between Oman’s national oil company OQ and Kuwait Petroleum International, has a design based on a hydrocracking unit and a petroleum coke unit. It is able to produce liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), naphtha, jet fuel, diesel, sulphur, and petroleum coke.
The refinery, which was originally supposed to come online in 2020 but suffered several delays, had begun trial operations for crude oil distillation in April 2023. It comprises storage and export facilities for liquid and bulk petroleum products at Port of Duqm, crude oil storage facilities at Ras Markaz and an 80-kilometre crude oil pipeline line from Ras Markaz to the refinery.
In addition to Duqm, Oman currently has two other operational refineries: the Mina Al-Fahal refinery (106 kb/d) and the Sohar refinery, whose capacity increased from 116 to 198 kb/d in 2019.
