Omani company plans to build a 500 MW solar project in Botswana

The Government of Botswana has selected the Omani renewable energy developer Naqaa Sustainable Energy to implement a 500 MW solar energy project at Maun in the northwest of the country (Zawya, 13/04/2026).

Local media, citing Botswana's Ministry of Minerals and Energy (MME), said the Omani firm has been named the 'preferred Independent Power Producer' to design, finance, construct, own, operate and maintain a 500 MW solar PV power plant featuring an integrated BESS. The project, planned to be the largest thus far in the country, will operate under a concession of at least 25 years initially, they noted.

Several agreements have been signed by Oman and Botswana in 2025, with the Omani state-backed O-Green platform (which owns Naqaa Sustainable Energy) and Botswana's Ministry of Minerals and Energy inked pacts to establish integrated clean energy projects with a planned capacity of up to 3 GW.

Botswana is targeting a 50% contribution from renewable sources to its national energy mix by 2030, up from around 8% today (pv-magazine, 14/04/2026).
