Oman selects KEPCO to build a 500 MW solar project

The Oman Power & Water Procurement Company (OPWP) has selected Korea Western Power, an affiliate of the South Korean state-owned power utility KEPCO (Korea Electric Power Corporation), as the preferred bidder to develop the 500 MW Manah 1 solar project in Oman. Construction should start in the second half of 2023 and commissioning is expected to take place in March 2025. OPWP will sign a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) to buy electric power from the power plant. The US$460m project is part of a 1 GW solar plant in the city of Manah in Ad Dakhiliyah, 170 km southwest of Oman’s capital, Muscat, to be built in two 500 MW phases.

Solar accounted for 2% of Oman’s capacity mix at the end of 2021. More than 1 GW of solar projects are currently under construction, and 2 GW under development.
