The Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority (GCCIA) has announced the start of construction of a US$700m direct power interconnection between Oman and the GCC regional electricity network (the GCCIA grid), according to the Oman News Agency.
The project involves the construction of two 400 kV transmission lines spanning approximately 530 km, linking the Authority’s Al Sila substation in the United Arab Emirates with the Ibri substation to be built by the Authority in the Sultanate of Oman. It also includes the construction of two main 400 kV transmission substations in Ibri and Al Bynouna, the press release said.
In addition, the project includes the construction of a dynamic compensator station aimed at enhancing grid stability and increasing transmission capacity, bringing total capacity to up to 1.6 GW.
