Oman has completed the merger of the electricity distribution and supply companies of the Nama Group into two companies, which have already commenced operations. The two new groups, Nama Electricity Distribution and Nama Supply have thus replaced the following four distribution and supply companies: Muscat Electricity Distribution Company (MEDC), Majan Electricity Company (MJEC), Mazoon Electricity Company (MZEC) and Tanweer (Rural Areas Electricity Company).
Nama Group partnered with entities such as the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, Oman Investment Authority (OIA) and the Authority for Public Services Regulation to guarantee the project completion. The new distribution and supply groups, which cover the whole country except for the Dhofar governorate (which is operated by Nama Dhofar Services), are seeking to revise cost structure and raise efficiency in order to prepare for privatisation. The Omani Government had issued directives in December 2021 to restructure the country’s electricity sector to enhance efficiency.
