Oman and Iran have agreed on a framework to establish a temporary navigational corridor through the Strait of Hormuz and implement a joint mine-clearance project. According to Iran, the proposed interim arrangement would route vessels entering the Persian Gulf through Iranian territorial waters, while outbound traffic would pass through both Iranian and Omani waters.
The two countries stated that the framework aims to restore safe navigation through the strait following disruptions linked to the recent conflict in the region. The proposed arrangements would also include mechanisms for information-sharing, traffic coordination and the provision of maritime security services, while discussions with other Gulf coastal states are expected to follow.
According to a joint statement, technical negotiations are to continue on a permanent maritime corridor, future administration of the strait, traffic management and maritime security arrangements (Oman Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement, 26/08/2026). Discussions on a permanent route could be completed within 30-60 days.
