Octopus Australia unveils 1.2 GW/4.8 GWh BESS project in NSW (Australia)

Octopus Australia, through its development partner Enervest, has referred the Hanworth Battery Project, a 1.2 GW/4.8 GWh battery energy storage system (BESS), for assessment under Australia’s Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act. “The proposed action will utilise lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries with an approximate capacity of 1.2 GW/4.8GWh (4-hour duration) connecting into the Transgrid transmission network”, according to the project description. The proposed facility would be developed in Bannaby, within the Upper Lachlan Shire of New South Wales.

The BESS would connect to Transgrid’s transmission network through an underground transmission line linking it to the existing 500 kV Bannaby Substation. Two alternative transmission routes remain under consideration as part of the ongoing connection agreement process with Transgrid.

According to the referral, the project would include approximately 708 battery containers, as well as a 33 kV/500 kV substation and associated switchyard equipment.
