NYISO selects transmission project to deliver 3 GW of wind to New York (US)

The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) has selected a transmission project that will be able to deliver at least 3 GW of capacity from offshore wind projects located off Long Island (US state of New York). The Propel Alternate Solution 5 project will add three underground cables connecting Long Island to the rest of the state and a 345 kV, 145 km transmission line across western and central Long Island.

The project, whose construction is expected to begin in 2026, will be developed by the New York Power Authority and New York Transco. The project is expected to be commissioned by May 2030 and is estimated to require an investment of US$3.26bn. The Propel Alternate Solution 5 project will advance New York State closer to its goal of reaching 9 GW of offshore wind power by 2035.
