Bangladesh state-owned North West Power Generation Company Ltd (NWPGCL) plans to develop an 800 MW LNG-fired CCGT power project in Rupsha, in the Khulna region of Bangladesh.
The company has issued an invitation of pre-qualification for engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning for the project, which will consist of two 400 MW gas-fired units. The US$950m project has secured a US$600m financing support from the Asian Development Bank and US$200m from the Islamic Development Bank, while the remaining US$150m will be funded by the government. Commissioning is expected in June 2019.
Bangladesh expects to start importing LNG as of early 2018, thanks to a 5.15 bcm/year floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) developed by Excelerate Energy near the Moheshkhali Island in the Bay of Bengal. National gas company Petrobangla is holding talks with RasGas (Qatar) for LNG supplies.
