NuScale signs deal with Nuclearelectrica for a 462 MW SMR in Romania

NuScale has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Romania’s state-owned nuclear company Nuclearelectrica to conduct engineering studies, technical reviews, and licensing and permitting activities at a site in Doicesti (Romania), the preferred location for the deployment of a small nuclear reactor (SMR) with a capacity of 462 MW. The United States Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) awarded a grant to Nuclearelectrica in early 2021 to conduct a study to identify and assess several sites across Romania, including locations where existing coal-fired power plants could be replaced with SMR plants.

Romania has two 650 MW nuclear reactors in operation on the site of Cernavoda using Canadian heavy water technology (Candu); they were commissioned in 1996 and 2007, respectively. Nuclear accounts for 7% of the country's installed capacity and 20% of its power generation (2020).
