Nucleoelectrica Argentina restarts Embalse nuclear power plant

Argentina's nuclear power plant operator Nucleoelectrica Argentina has restarted its 683 MW Embalse nuclear power plant in the province of Cordoba (Argentina). The reactor, which was commissioned in 1984, was shut down in late 2015 for a three-year modernisation programme that included replacing the steam generators and retubing the reactor. The upgrade was completed in January 2019 at a cost of US$2.15bn and was followed by a four-month test period. It enabled to raise the gross capacity of the reactor from 648 MW to 683 MW and to extend its operating life for another 30 years.

Argentina has three operating nuclear power plants, namely 362 MW Atucha 1 (commissioned in 1974), 745 MW Atucha 2 (commissioned in 2013) and Embalse. Overall, nuclear covers around 5% of Argentina's power generation (2018). Two reactors could be added at Atucha: a 700-745 MW Candu-6 PHWR and a 1,000-1,150 MW Hualong One PWR. Construction is expected to last 8 years at least.
