Nuclearlectrica keen to acquire some Enel’s operations in Romania

Romanian state owned power producer Nuclearlectrica (81%) has expressed interest in Enel’s assets in Romania as the Italy-based company has decided to leave the Romanian market to reduce its debts. The electricity distributor Electrica (49% owned by the state) is also in talks with Enel to buy some of its local operations. Enel, which holds a third of the electricity distribution market in Romania announced it will sell its business by the end of 2014. Enel holds the monopoly for electricity distribution in Bucharest and surrounding areas, in Banat and Dobrogea. The electricity distribution business is strategic for the Romanian state, especially in Dobrogea, where there are a lot of wind parks and where the state plans to build two new nuclear reactors. The two nuclear reactors currently functioning in Romania are also in Dobrogea and are operated by Nuclearelectrica.

Enel entered the Romania market in 2005 through the purchase the Electrica Banat and Elecrica Dobrogea electric utilities from the Romanian state. In 2008, the comapny took over Electrica Muntenia Sud, the utility in Bucharest.
