The Indian state-owned power group NTPC has announced a 65% growth in its coal production in fiscal year 2023 (April 2022-March 2023), from 14 Mt in 2021-2022 to over 23 Mt in 2022-2023. The group operates four coal mines, namely TPC Pakri-Barwadih (Jharkhand), NTPC Chatti Bariatu (Jharkhand), NTPC Dulanga (Odisha) and NTPC Talaipalli (Chhattisgarh). NTPC's annual overburden removal more than doubled from around 32 Mt in 2021-2022 to 73 Mt in 2022-2023 (+129%), its highest level ever.
At the end of March 2023, NTPC Group's installed capacity stood at 71.6 GW, including 12.6 GW through subsidiaries or joint ventures. The group operated over 59 GW of installed capacity, including over 51 GW of coal, 4 GW of gas or oil, 3 GW of solar PV, 800 MW of hyropower and 50 MW of wind. NTPC's power generation rose by nearly 11% in fiscal year 2023 to 400 TWh.
