The Indian energy company NTPC, through NTPC Green Energy Ltd (NGEL), has started development work on a new green energy complex, which will include 20 GW of renewable capacity aimed at producing hydrogen, and the Indian Government is about to lay the foundation stone of the project. NTPC’s Green Hydrogen Hub Project will be located in Pudimadaka, in the State of Andhra Pradesh (eastern India).
The project aims to produce 1,500 t/d (547.5 kt/year) of green hydrogen and 7,500 t/d (2.7 Mt/year) of derivatives such as methanol, urea and sustainable aviation fuel, mainly aimed at export markets.
India unveiled a green hydrogen and green ammonia plan in 2022, aiming to produce 5 Mt/year in 2030 and for the country to become an export hub for hydrogen. In 2023, India published its National Green Hydrogen Mission, which sets green hydrogen consumption targets for some industries, and establishes a framework to encourage the manufacturing of electrolysers and the production of green hydrogen in the country (SIGHT program).
