Indian independent power producers Adani Power, GMR, Jindal Steel and Power and Sterlite have decided to withdraw from the bidding process for the construction of two 4,000 MW ultra mega power projects (UMPPs) in Odisha and Tamil Nadu (India), leaving state-run NTPC the sole bidder for developing the projects. NTPC, NHPC, Tata, Adani Power, JSW Energy, Jindal Steel and Power, Sterlite, CLP and L&T were among the pre-qualified firms for the 4 GW Odisha coal-fired project, based on domestic coal resources and estimated at Rs 25,000 crore (US$4.1bn). NTPC, Adani Power, CLP, GMR, Jindal Steel and Power, JSW Energy, Sterlite, L&T had been pre-qualified for the Cheyyur project in Tamil Nadu, based on imported coal and estimated at Rs 24,200 crore (US$3.9bn).
So far, four UMPPs have been awarded: Tata Power is operating the Mundra UMPP in Gujarat, while Reliance Power won Sasan (Madhya Pradesh), Krishnapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and Tilaiya (Jharkhand).
