NTPC increases capacity of 2 thermal power plants in India (+1.3 GW)

Indian state-owned power corporation NTPC has commissioned two 660 MW coal-fired generation units at its Tanda and Khargone power plants located in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, respectively. The group has put into operation the second unit of the second phase (unit 2.2) of the Tanda power plant, where four 110 MW and one 660 MW subcritical units are already operational. NTPC has also commissioned the second 660 MW unit of the Khargone ultra-supercritical (USC) power plant. The plant has an efficiency of 41.5%, resulting in a lower coal consumption and reduced CO2 emissions.

Earlier in January 2020, the board of NTPC approved the acquisition of the majority stakes held by the Indian Ministry of Power in two power generation companies: NTPC will acquire 100% of North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO), which operates hydropower, thermal (gas-fired) and solar power plants in the north-east of India and 74.5% of THDC India, which operates 1,400 MW of hydropower plants (including the 1,000 MW Tehri-1 dam).

NTPC operates 54 power plants, of which 23 are coal-fired, 7 CCGT or liquid fuel-fired, 2 hydropower, 1 wind and 11 solar. The group also has 10 coal-fired power plants and 1 gas-fired power plant owned by joint-ventures or subsidiaries and 11 renewable energy projects. In December 2019, the group commissioned the first 800 MW unit of the 1,600 MW Darlipali coal-fired power plant in Odisha. NTPC, which now operates 48,645 MW (57,106 MW including affiliates) aims to achieve a total installed capacity of 130 GW by 2032.
