India’s state-owned power producer NTPC has identified three potential locations for nuclear power plants in Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Odisha (India), as part of its strategy to develop 30 GW of nuclear capacity across 14 states by 2047. The company has submitted detailed feasibility reports for all three sites, each able to accommodate 2 to 4 GW of nuclear capacity, to the Atomic Energy Commission for approval. Nuclear power is a key component of NTPC’s expansion strategy, with an interim target of approximately 6 GW by 2037.
In late August 2026, NTPC raised its long-term growth ambitions, targeting 149 GW of installed capacity by 2032 across thermal, renewable, hydropower, storage, mining and nuclear activities. By 2037, it aims to reach 244 GW, excluding storage (KEI, 31/08/2026). The company plans to invest approximately USD177bn (INR16.9tn) through fiscal 2037, with the goal of nearly doubling its generation portfolio by 2032.
During FY2025-26, NTPC added a record 9.6 GW of capacity, including 5.48 GW of non-fossil capacity, bringing its total installed capacity to approximately 89 GW. The group generated 432 TWh of electricity, accounting for around 24% of India’s total power generation.
