NTPC aims to reach 35 GW of RES by 2027 (India)

India's NTPC (National Thermal Power Co.), a 51% state-owned company, plans on reaching 35 GW of renewable installed capacity by 2027 (India).

NTPC is India largest power generator, with a consolidated capacity (including joint ventures and subsidiaries) of 66 GW in May 2021 (i.e. 16% of the total), including 54 GW of coal, 6.5 GW of gas, and 5.5 GW of renewables. NTPC plans to increase its capacity to 130 GW by 2032, of which 65% from coal and 23% from solar. NTPC aims to invest US$75bn to become the country's largest renewable company in the next ten years. In early 2020, NTPC acquired the majority stakes in two power generation companies: NEEPCO (100%, for US$1.5bn) and THDC (74.5%, for around US$1bn). The company increased its power generation by 8% in FY2020-2021.

In April 2021, NTPC initiated tenders for 2.2 GW of solar capacity, of which at least 1.2 GW in Rajasthan. Other tenders have been announced in recent months, including 1.3 GW by Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) and 1.2 GW in Rajasthan by SECI, which launched another 1.2 GW tender in April 2021 for solar-wind projects.
