The New South Wales (NSW) Independent Planning Commission (IPC) has granted approval for the Tallawang Solar and Battery Hybrid Project, to be developed by Australia’s Potentia Energy near Gulgong, within the state's Central-West Orana Renewable Energy Zone (REZ). The project will comprise a 500 MW solar park integrated with a 500 MW/1,000 MWh battery energy storage system. Although the project received initial approval from NSW planning authorities in July 2025, it was referred to the IPC for further review following 54 public objections submitted to the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure during the public consultation period.
Construction is expected to begin in early 2027, in line with the timeline for the Central-West Orana REZ transmission project, which will provide the necessary grid connection infrastructure. That transmission initiative aims to deliver 4.5 GW of new network capacity by 2028, enabling the connection of 7.7 GW of solar and wind generation to the state’s electricity grid.
Potentia Energy, formerly known as Enel Green Power Australia, is jointly owned by Italy’s Enel Green Power and Japanese energy company Inpex (50% each).
