NRG Energy will retire 1.6 GW of US coal-fired capacity by June 2022

The US power utility NRG Energy plans to retire four coal-fired power units totalling 1.6 GW of capacity and connected to the PJM regional transmission organization (eastern United States) in June 2022, namely 410 MW Indian River 4 in Delaware, 328 MW Waukegan 7, 354 MW Waukegan 8 and 510 MW Will County 4 plant in Illinois. These power units represent around 55% of NRG Energy's coal-fired power capacity and the group will assess the viability of the remaining units. The group aims to cut its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and to reach net zero by 2030.

Earlier in June 2021, DTE Energy decommissioned the last unit of its 840 MW River Rouge coal-fired power plant in southeast Michigan. Coal accounts for 19% of the installed capacity in the United States, with 237 GW in late 2020 (down from 292 GW in 2015 and 324 GW in 2010).
