NRG Energy and JX Nippon complete CCS plant in Texas (US)

Petra Nova, the 50-50 joint venture of US energy utility NRG Energy and JX Nippon, has completed its Petra Nova Carbon Capture Project at the existing WA Parish coal-fired power plant in Fort Bend County, in Texas (United States).

The project is a commercial-scale carbon capture system that captures more than 90% of the CO2 in the processed flue gas from an existing unit at the WA Parish power plant (240 MW unit 8). It is expected to capture about 1.6 MtCO2/year. First CO2 was captured in September 2016 and more than 100 ktCO2 have been delivered to the West ranch oil field so far.

The CCS project will enable to increase domestic oil production at the West Ranch oil field, jointly owned by the joint venture and Hilcorp Energy Company. Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) operations are expected to boost oil production at the field from around 300 bbl/d to approximately 15,000 bbl/d. The West Ranch oil field is currently estimated to hold approximately 60 mbl of oil recoverable from EOR operations. NRG and JX Nippon each hold a 25% interest in the oil field through the Company.
