Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) started the excavation work of two 700 MW nuclear reactors (PHWR) at Rajasthan Atomic Power Project (units 7 and 8), after the receipt of excavation clearance from Atomic Energy Regulatory Board. The two reactors are scheduled to be completed in June 2016 and December 2016, respectively. The RAPP project has an estimated cost of €2.1bn. In October 2009, the Government also approved the construction of two further 700 MW reactor (PHWR) at Kakrapar (Gujarat). NPCIL completed the excavation work for the two units at Kakrapar which are scheduled to be completed in 2012. The site already hosts two 220 MW units, commissioned in 1993 and 1995. Approval was also given for the construction of two 700 MW units (PHWR) at Rawatbhata (Rajasthan): the construction has been started.
In addition, NPCIL is also developing three reactors in Kaiga-4 (220 MW) and Kudankulam-1 and -2 (1,000 MW each).
