The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) has selected 12 onshore wind projects to bring forward in licensing, out of 26 projects submitted for new power production in April 2024. Although the selected projects comprehend less than half of the submitted projects with approximately 4.5 GW, the NVE considers unrealistic the possibility of granting a license to all of them. In addition, there is an application for the upgrading and expansion of the 150 MW Alta wind power plant. The selected projects will be sent to a first round of consultation in September 2024, when they will be assessed based on location, their compliance with the regional plan for wind power, among other criteria. Once the consultation is over, the NVE plans to hold public meetings and consultation meetings to eventually prepare a study programme for each individual project, expecting to have them ready by early 2025, moment when the license applications will be able to be prepared. A second consultation period should take place after the impact assessments have been completed and the licence applications have been submitted.
As of end 2023, wind represented 12% of Norway’s installed capacity with over 5 GW and covered 9% of the total power generation.
