The Norwegian Government has announced the launch of a large-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) project located across multiple locations in Norway. The Longship CCS facility has a planned capture capacity of 400 ktCO2/year at the Heidelberg Materials site in Brevik, as well as a capacity 350 ktCO2/year at the Hafslund Celsio site in Oslo (with a planned start-up for 2029).
The captured CO2n will be transported by ship to a terminal in Oygarden near Bergen, Norway's second-largest city, where it will be injected and stored 2,600 meters beneath the seabed. In early June 2025, the first CO2 shipment from Brevik arrived at the Oygarden terminal, with injection into the subsea reservoirs scheduled to begin in August 2025.
In total, the NOK34bn (€2.94bn) project will capture and store carbon in phases: phase 1 will feature a total storage capacity of 1.5 MtCO2, which will be increased to 5 MtCO2 for phase 2, corresponding to over 10% of total Norwegian CO2 emissions.
