Norway identifies 20 new suitable areas to reach its 30 GW offshore wind goal

The Norwegian energy regulator NVE has identified 20 areas along Norway’s coast deemed suitable for deploying offshore wind parks, which will help the country meet its 2040 targets of reaching 30 GW of offshore wind capacity. The areas are located along the entire Norwegian coast, from Skagerak in the south to the Barents Sea in the north.

Norway has already opened two offshore wind areas in the North Sea for the development of up to 4.5 GW of capacity: Utsira Nord (1.5 GW) and Sørlige Nordsjø II (3 GW). In late March 2023, the Norwegian Government opened its first offshore wind tenders, in which the country hopes to award at least 3 GW of capacity in the North Sea, through two calls for bids. As of end-2021, Norway only had about 6 MW of installed offshore wind capacity.
