Northland Power and Shizen Energy plan 600 MW offshore wind projects in Japan

Northland Power has signed an agreement with Shizen Energy to set up a 50-50 joint-venture, Chiba Offshore Wind, that will focus on developing around 600 MW of offshore wind projects in the Chiba prefecture of Japan.

Northland Power is a Canadian renewable project developer, which has stakes in 2.4 GW (net 2 GW) of operating generating capacity and 399 MW of generating capacity under construction, representing the Deutsche Bucht offshore wind project in the German North Sea and the La Lucha solar project in Mexico. Northland also owns a 60% equity stake in the 1,044 MW Hai Long projects under development in Taiwan. Shizen Energy is a Japanese renewable project developer, which has contributed to the development of nearly 1 GW of renewable projects in Japan (as of the end of April 2019) ans is developing overseas: it completed its first renewable project in Brazil in 2019 and has started working on wind and solar projects in Vietnam and Thailand.

Japan is betting on offshore wind power. In August 2019, the Ministries of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) identified 11 areas for offshore wind power promotion in 5 prefectures. Four areas are more advanced, namely Noshiro (Mitane and Oga), in Akita prefecture; Yurihonjo (north and south), in Akita prefecture; Choshi, in Tokyo prefecture ; and Goto (floating wind), in Nagasaki prefecture. In addition, seven other areas have been selected as promising for future development: Aomori offshore Japan Sea (north side), Aomori offshore Japan Sea (south side), Mutsu Bay in Aomori Prefecture, Happomachi off Noshiro City in Akita Prefecture, Katagami off Akita Prefecture, Murakami City in Niigata Prefecture, and off Ejima in Nagasaki Prefecture.
