The Canadian renewable developer Northland Power has launched consultations for the development of a 900 MW offshore wind project to be located off the west coast of the Isle of Lewis, Scotland (United Kingdom). The Spiorad na Mara offshore wind project could feature up to 65 fixed-bottom turbines. The power plant would meet the electricity needs of around 1.2 million Scottish households, and offset emissions by more than 1.7 MtCO2/year. The project is owned by Northland Power (75.5%) and Ireland's national power utility ESB (24.5%), with Northland leading on the development, construction, and operation.
The developers have said they would organise two public consultation phases before submitting consent applications for the project. The first phase of consultation took place in September 2024 and this is the second phase.
Scotland targets 11 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030. At the national level, the United Kingdom aims to reach 50 GW of installed offshore wind capacity by 2030.
