North Macedonia unveils its Enhanced NDC

North Macedonia has released its Enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). The country intends to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 51% in 2030 compared to 1990 levels. Expressed in net emissions, the country plans an 82% reduction in GHG emissions by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. In the long run, North Macedonia aims at reducing its GHG emissions by 61.5% in 2040 compared to 2005 levels. The Enhanced NDC includes additional mitigation measures in agriculture, waste and LULUCF.

The NDC is in line with the draft National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP), which aims to achieve 38% of renewables in final energy consumption, including 66% in power generation, 45% in heating and cooling and 10% in transports, and aims to save 20.8% of final energy consumption compared to a business-as-usual scenario (34.5% primary energy savings). By 2040, the share of renewables in final energy consumption should reach 45%.

The country’s First Nationally Determined Contribution, unveiled in 2015, aimed to reduce CO2 emissions from fossil fuel combustion by 30% to 36% in 2030 compared a business-as-usual scenario.
