North Macedonia signs construction contract for a gas interconnector with Greece

The Ministry of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources of North Macedonia has announced that the national gas transmission system operator (TSO) Nomagas had signed a construction contract with Rapid Build for the construction of the North Macedonian section of a gas interconnection with Greece.

The project consists in a 1.5 bcm/year gas pipeline, stretching over 123 km between Negotino, Gevgelija, Evzoni (Greece), and Nea Mesimvria (Greece), including 68 km in North Macedonia. The Greek company Terna started works on its country's section in February 2025. On the North Macedonian side, construction works are expected to start in June 2025 and to be completed in early 2027. The capacity of the hydrogen-ready gas pipeline could be later expanded to 3 bcm/year.

The €140m project will be financed by the EBRD (€99m), the EIB (€29m), and the WBIF, the Western Balkans Investment framework of the EU (€13m).
