North Macedonia plans to convert 1.1 GW of capacity to gas/hydrogen

The government of the North Macedonia has decided to launch projects for the construction of a regional 800 MW gas/hydrogen-fired power plant in Negotino and a 250-300 MW gas/hydrogen-fired power plant in Bitola in North Macedonia. With these projects, North Macedonia expects to convert existing coal- and fuel oil-fired power units to hydrogen-ready gas-fired power units, in an attempt to phase out coal by 2030.

The North Macedonian state-owned power utility Elektrani na Severna Makedonija (ESM) is expected to start negotiations with potential strategic investors for the realization of the power plants, according to the Law on Strategic Investments. Gas would be imported through a proposed gas pipeline connecting to the Alexandroupolis LNG terminal in Greece.

At the end of 2022, North Macedonia had a total installed capacity of 2.1 GW of which the majority was thermal energy (approximately 62%), with gas accounting for 22% of the installed capacity and no current hydrogen capacity.
