NNPC and TotalEnergies launch the 3.6 bcm/year Ubeta gas project in Nigeria

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) and France’s TotalEnergies have officially launched the Ubeta upstream gas project, located northwest of Port Harcourt, Nigeria. The US$550m project is expected to have an output 350 mcf/d (3.6 bcm/year) of natural gas once operational.

The gas produced from Ubeta will be supplied to NLNG, a liquefaction plant located in Bonny Island with an on-going capacity expansion from 22 to 30 Mt/year. Production start-up at Ubeta is expected in 2027. The field is part of the OML 58 onshore licence operated by TotalEnergies, which already features two fields currently in production, the Obagi oil field and the Ibewa gas and condensate field. The OML 58 licence is owned by NNPC at 60% and TotalEnergies at 40%.

In 2023, TotalEnergies produced 219 kboe/d of hydrocarbons in Nigeria. At the national level, the country produced over 38.5 bcm of natural gas in 2023.
