The Danish cable manufacturer NKT has signed a firm contract for the HVDC power cable system for Eastern Green Link 3 (EGL3) in the United Kingdom with a joint venture between the UK grid owners National Grid and SSEN Transmission. This order is the largest single project award ever received by NKT and will support the reinforcement of the UK transmission grid (NKT press release, 04/03/2026).
With a value of over EUR2.2bn, the turnkey contract will see NKT design, manufacture, and install a 525 kV HVDC power cable system with a route length of around 680 km, including onshore and offshore cable sections. The 2 GW link will run between Longside in Aberdeenshire (Scotland) and Walpole in Norfolk (England). Construction of EGL3 is proposed to start in 2029, with the aim of the link being fully operational by 2033.
Hitachi Energy has also been confirmed as the delivery partner for HVDC converter stations in Scotland and England.
