US power utility Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO) has submitted its Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) to the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC), anticipating energy needs over the next 20 years.
The company will stop its 603 MW two-unit Bailly coal-fired power plant (480 MW net) that was commissioned between 1962 and 1968 by mid-2018 and two units at its 2,201 MW Schahfer coal-fired power plant (a 540 MW unit commissioned in 1976 and a 556 MW unit commissioned in 1979) by the end of 2023. These retirements would be subject to review and approval by the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO). NIPSCO will begin work to identify affordable replacement options, and is considering developing a CCGT power project.
The utility is facing low market prices for natural gas and new environmental regulations that would require significant investments in its ageing coal-fired fleet.
