Nigeria’s Geregu Power plans to expand its gas-fired capacity to 1.2 GW

The Nigerian company Geregu Power has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Siemens Energy to expand capacity at its Geregu gas-fired power plant, located in central Nigeria, to 1.2 GW. The capacity of Geregu 1 is expected to increase from 435 MW to 500 MW, in addition to the establishment of a combined cycle to generate an additional 200 MW and new constructions using lower emission turbines with an additional capacity of 500 MW, bringing Geregu Power’s total capacity to 1.2 GW.

In 2013, Geregu Power was acquired by Amperion Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL, operator) and State Grid Corporation of China, which launched a major overhaul project for the plant, which was first commissioned in 2007. In 2021, APDCL took full ownership of the Geregu power plant.

As of end-2022, gas represented 84% of Nigeria’s installed capacity (79% in 2023) and 74% of its power generation.
