Nigeria starts talks to add an 8th train at the Bonny LNG plant

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has started discussing with its partners in Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) to add an 8th train to the Bonny gas liquefaction plant, which is currently composed of 6 trains with a total capacity of 22 Mt/year (29.7 bcm/year). NLNG is a company made up of NNPC (49%), Shell (25.6%), Total (15%) and Eni (10.4%). In 2019, Nigeria was the sixth-largest LNG producer in the world, with its production reaching 28 bcm (+3% compared to 2018).

In January 2020, NLNG made the final investment decision (FID) regarding the development of a seventh train on its LNG plant. Train 7 will have a capacity of 8 Mt/year (nearly 11 bcm/year) and will raise the liquefaction capacity of the existing LNG plant by more than 35%, from 22 Mt/year (29.7 bcm/year) to 30 Mt/year (over 40.5 bcm/year). The construction of the new train will take up to five years and its commissioning is expected to begin in 2024.
