Nigeria plans to add 420 MW of solar projects

Nigeria plans to install 420 MW of solar capacity across nine of the country's 36 states. Financing would be ensured by the German government, under the terms of a 2008 bilateral agreement, the Nigerian-German Energy Partnership-Renewable Energy and Efficient Energy Projects, that planned a €20m (US$27.5m) investment to increase energy efficiency and power generation diversification in the country. The project is in line with the Power Reform Act, which stipulates that Nigeria shall cover 5% of its power generation with renewables by 2020. In a first phase, the pilot program will start in the nine states of Adamawa, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, Nasarawa and Sokoto. The states will receive a 30 MW solar power plant worth US$50-60m, but additional capacities should be added in the states of Kano and Nasarawa. The solar programme is expected to eventually cover all the northern states.
