The Nigerian Government has approved the start of procurement for the proposed East and West Super Grids, which are intended to strengthen the national grid and increase transmission capacity from around 5 GW to 19 GW within two years (The Guardian, 28/10/2026). It also approved three transmission projects: a new 33 kV line connected to the Katampe substation near Abuja, three 300 MVA transformers for the Ikeja West substation, and the reconstruction and upgrade of the 35.6 km Itumola–Mapasin–Shagamu line into a 132 kV double-circuit line. The government is also building a new National Control Centre in Osogbo and conducting a nationwide audit of ageing electricity infrastructure.
Nigeria's power transmission grid is poorly maintained and frequently vandalised, resulting in T&D losses of around 9% of electricity produced. The country experienced 2 total grid collapses in 2025 compared to 9 in 2024, 3 in 2023 and 6 in 2022.
