Nigeria adds 1.5 GW of gas-fired power capacity to reduce power shortage

The government of Nigeria has announced the inauguration of three gas-fired power plants in the framework of the National Integrated Power Projects (NIPPs), namely the 450 MW Ihovbor project, the 450 MW Sapele II project and the 560 MW Calabar project, that add 1,460 MW to the national grid. In addition, three other power projects, 252 MW Gbarain, 378 MW Egbema and 252 MW Omoku, have reached advanced stages of completion and should soon contribute by more than 880 MW to the installed capacity in Nigeria.

The commissioning of these plants is expected to ease power supply, in a context of low power plant availability (4.8 GW of available capacity compared to an installed capacity of more than 12 GW in 2013) linked to gas supply disruptions (pipeline attacks). In late May 2015, power shortages aggravated with power supply availability falling to less than 1,330 MW, while fuel scarcity is threatening economic activities in the country.
