The Canadian uranium mining company NexGen Energy has received a positive environmental assessment (EA) from the Saskatchewan Province (central Canada) to proceed with the development of its Rook I uranium project, the largest development-stage uranium project in the country. The project, 100% owned by NexGen Energy, has a total initial capital expenditure of CAD1.3bn (US$943m).
NexGen is the first company in more than 20 years to receive full provincial EA approval for a uranium project in Saskatchewan. NexGen has submitted all responses to the Federal technical review of the Rook I Project Environmental Impact Statement and is currently awaiting the completion of the Federal EA approval process.
Canada is ranked third in the world in terms of uranium reserves and production. The country’s proved reserves stood at 282,300 t in 2022 (behind Australia and Kazakhstan), while its production reached 4,692 t (behind Kazakhstan and Namibia).
