The US State of New York has awarded conditional procurement contracts for 6.4 GW of renewable capacity in the State, including three offshore wind projects totalling 4 GW and 22 land-based projects totalling 2.4 GW. The awarded capacity is expected to generate 19 TWh/year of electricity, enough to supply 2.6 million New York households and meet about 12% of New York State’s electricity needs in 2030. It is also expected to reduce emissions by 9.4 MtCO2/year.
Regarding offshore wind, the State of New York has notably awarded contracts to the 1,404 MW Attentive Energy One project, developed by TotalEnergies, Rise Light & Power and Corio Generation, as well as to the 1,314 MW Excelsior Wind project developed by Vineyard Offshore, a subsidiary of Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP). In addition, RWE and National Grid’s 3.2 GW Community Offshore Wind project received an offer for its 1,314 MW, which will form the first phase of the project. The announcement comes just a few weeks after New York regulators rejected requests by three offshore wind developers to renegotiate their contracts because of rising costs.
As for land-based projects, the winning proposals includes 14 solar PV projects, six wind park repowerings, one new wind project, and one return-to-service hydroelectric scheme. Project capacities range from 5 MW to 402 MW, for a total capacity of 2,410 MW.
The State of New York aims to reach 70% of its electricity coming from renewable sources by 2030, as well as to develop 9 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2035. Following these awards, New York State announced it now has enough operating, contracted, and under development renewable energy projects to supply 79% of the state’s 2030 electricity needs with renewable energy.
