New York (US) awards 1.3 GW offshore wind park to RWE’s joint venture

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) (United States) has awarded a 1.3 GW offtake contract to Community Offshore Wind, a joint venture of the German energy company RWE and National Grid Ventures, in its third offshore wind solicitation. The offshore wind project will be developed as the first of several phases located within Community Offshore Wind’s 3.2 GW seabed lease in the New York Bight, that the company secured in 2022 during a federal auction by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM). The 1.3 GW project plans to interconnect into Brooklyn (New York) and its first phase is expected to reduce New York state’s electricity-system carbon emissions by up to 5% and to generate enough electricity to power at least 500,000 US households.

New York aims to achieve a zero-emission electricity sector by 2040, including 70% renewable energy generation by 2030, and develop 9,000 MW of offshore wind by 2035.
