New York state (US) unveils US$1.5bn plan to boost renewable projects

The US state of New York has unveiled its Clean Climate Careers initiative following the US decision to withdraw from the Paris Accord.

Under this strategy, New York will invest up to US1.5bn in major renewable energy projects, including wind and solar, through the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and the New York Power Authority (NYPA), which should boost local employment and economy. This should result in an additional 2.5 TWh/year of renewable electricity, representing the largest clean energy procurement by a state in US history, and helping the state to meet its target of achieving 50% of electricity from renewables by 2030. New York aims to double the solar capacity, from around 800 MW to more than 1,600 MW by the end of 2018. Overall, the Clean Energy Standard should result in the development of 40 to 60 large renewable energy projects by 2022.

The state will also significantly expand energy efficiency and solar installations at public buildings, doubling annual investments in energy efficiency and solar deployments from US$150m to US$300m (mix of NYPA's low-cost financing and additional private sector capital). With this expanded investment, NYPA will conduct 1,000 energy efficiency and solar audits for municipalities and school districts by 2020 to help support prudent investments. NYPA will also install more than 125 MW of solar capacity on schools and other public buildings by 2020, achieving a 300% increase in distributed solar projects at public facilities state-wide.
