New York state (US) pledges to 100% CO2-free electricity by 2040

The governor of New York (United States) has committed to move to 100% carbon-free electricity by 2040, just a few days after setting an electricity storage objective of 3,000 MW by 2030 with an interim goal of 1,500 MW by 2025. This pledge also follows the New York Public Service Commission's order approving plans to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 40% by 2030 and 80% by 2050, with 50% of the state's electricity generation coming from renewable energies by 2030.

The state of New York is moving forward quickly with the development of renewable energies and launched an 800 MW offshore wind solicitation in November 2018, the first step towards reaching the target of 2,400 MW of new offshore wind generation by 2030.

In April 2018, the state also unveiled a new energy efficiency objective and announced a new plan for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and consumer energy costs by 2025, which incentivises energy developers, residential households along with commercial and institutional building owners in order to pursue building improvements to reduce energy consumption by 185 trillion BTUs (4.7 Mtoe), roughly 40% below the 2025 forecast energy use.
